As technology advances it gets more and more difficult to keep up. Not too long ago a Personal Digital Assistant, or PDA, was a pretty decent sized hand held device that allowed you to store important information but did not allow any connectivity at the time they were introduced. Just about everyone assumed that PDAs would offer connectivity in some form either to the internet, to voice communications, or both. In June of 2003 Handspring introduced the Treo 600 and soon the PDA had all kinds of connectivity.

Nowadays when you talk about the functionality of a PDA you use terms similar to the terms used to describe a computer. The Treo 600 has a 160×160 LCD display, a 144-MHz ARM processor, 24MB of available RAM storage, and a built in digital camera. With the Treo 600 you can download files on the internet, check your email, talk on the phone, check your address book, and take a picture. The technology involved in creating the Treo 600 is incredible and its functionality is almost endless when it comes to communications.

Surfing and Emailing

The Treo 600 comes with a proprietary web browser called Blazer and, because it is one of the first PDA web browsers, it is neat to play with at first but it has many functional limitations. The Blazer browser on the Treo 600 has a difficult time with pictures in a JPG format and documents in a TXT format. Since these are two of the most popular formats for these types of docs on the internet, it can be difficult to surf the web on the Treo 600. However there are add ons you can get to help Blazer surf the internet more effectively. For instance, you can get WebXCope for your Treo 600 that will help break down the internet so that Blazer can more easily use it. With some help your Blazer browser can be effective.

For help in storing files the Treo 600 has an SD/MMC compatible port. In simple terms this is where you can put in an SD/MMC expansion card that will allow you to move important items off of your Treo 600 and free up room on the built in memory. If you have important documents or emails that you want to keep safe then download them to your SD/MMC card. This is one of the more convenient functions of this groundbreaking piece of communications equipment.

Three of the priorities of virtually every person are organization, communications and multi-tasking and while many handheld units are on the market to meet these needs, one of the popular devices in the Treo from Palm Incorporated. Originated by Handspring, the Palm personal data assistant was originally released as an informational unit only. In 2002 the addition of the GSM enabled cell phone technology help it meet the needs for organization and communications.

The synchronization of all Treo applications allows for users to perform many tasks at the same time, such as checking their calendar or reading an email while on the telephone. Allowing users to multitask is one of the benchmarks of the Treo that helped it grow significantly in popularity. With the advancement of Code Division Multiple Access, the Treo has been unlocked for use with many cellular phone carriers, unlike some other units that will only work with partnered services.

Being able to add applications from third-party resources also make the Treo more versatile for business use and its operating software, which is compatible with both Microsoft Windows and Macintosh MAC operating systems allows more users to utilize its functionality.

Mobile Office On The Road

Busy executives and other road warriors who spend their workday on the road often do have the time to call the office and hope someone is available to gather information for them. Equipped with a Treo they can store all their important information in one place, complete with a list of contacts and if a question arises while on the phone, there is no reason to make a return call. Its synchronization allows the user to check their onboard files while on the phone to help make instant decisions.

Numerous accessories are also available for the Treo and a choice of carrying cases can make the phone readily accessible from the belt, a purse or even a pocket. Having everything that may be needed at all times can be memory intensive, and the 64 megabyte built-in memory should be able to store it all. However, it also accepts storage media to insure there is plenty of memory available.

With Bluetooth integration, the Treo enables the user to use a hands-free over-the-ear unit for safe communications while on the move. Voice command dialing also allows the user to make calls without having to remove the unit from its storage place. Synchronization with a home computer or laptop insures the user can maintain their files and keep them updated.

Do you remember when computers were first coming out and changing the way businesses operated? Pretty soon, it wasn’t just businesses—computers and the internet have changed the way that people live their everyday lives.

The same thing is happening again with PDAs. PDAs, or Personal Digital Assistants, are mini computers that fit into the palm of your hand. The capabilities of PDAs are practically unlimited!

In The Beginning

Personal Digital Assistants, also known as pocket computers or palmtop computers, did not always have such a wide array of features. When the digital instruments were first introduced, they were designed to be merely personal organizers. These personal organizers had a simple range of features, such as a notepad function, calendar, and calculator.

The Evolution Of PDAs

As PDAs became increasingly used for business purposes, more features were added to allow the user to have access to almost every form of communication available—right at their fingertips! Today, PDAs can access the Internet, receive and send Emails, play mp3 files, create spreadsheets, play games, record videos, act as cameras, and even act a phones!

Standard Features

There are a few features that every PDA needs in order to function. Typically, PDAs use a touch screen to enter data. A stylus is used to interact with the touch screen. For business use, PDAs typically have a full keyboard as opposed to a touch screen.

PDAs also have a memory card slot for storing information. Most early PDAs did not have a memory card slot, but it has become a standard feature. Personal Digital Assistants now typically have a Secure Digital (SD) or Compact Flash slot. Some even have a USB port to accommodate USB flash drives.

The final standard feature of a Personal Digital Assistant is Bluetooth or WiFi for connectivity. This is how the device is able to access email and the Internet anywhere, at any time.

Customizing Your Personal Digital Assistant

Just like your personal computer, there are many ways that you can customize your Personal Digital Assistant. Custom software is available for download, so you can download features and settings that meet your needs and preferences. Additionally, you can download your favorite games for your PDA as well.

The settings for the display on your PDA can be changed to allow for a custom picture, background, or sound. Additionally, you can purchase a wide variety of external accessories that will set your PDA apart from the rest.

What Will They Think Of Next?

Five years ago personal computers were the thing to have. Now, technology has provided a new tool for society to obsess about. Whatever will they think of next?

There does not seem to be any limits to the numbers of PDA software that are available on the market today and with people spending a lot of money on such software, they expect good value for their money and in this they are not going to be disappointed.

Many busy people believe it is nice to have an assistant that make phone calls for them while they keep track of all their important information as well as their schedules. Additionally, it is nice to be able to look up that information while talking on the phone and keeping it updated through their computer. With the growing use of PDA phones, most find these tasks are easier to perform.

No longer the large, bulky items that originally hit the market PDA phones eliminate the need to carry multiple devices to accomplish the same tasks. Additionally, many PDA phones allow called to be made directly from their internal phone books with a few taps of the stylus. While talking on the phone, application integration allows them to look up information while still on the phone saving the time they previously needed to call back once it was found. In some cases they had to write it down, as they could not see it while talking on their PDA phones.

Daily synchronization between the PDA phones and their home, work or laptop computers enables them to keep their calendar and phone list updated. If the information on their PDA phones should ever accidentally be erased, they can always run a synchronization to have it reloaded from their computer.

Written And Spoken Words Can Be Exchanged

With many of the PDA phones, wireless service for the phone also allows for wireless web browsing through the same carrier. This allows the user to access email and to send responses. With many services text messaging and instant messaging is also part of the software package included with the PDA phones,

They also eliminate the need to tote several items along with them when traveling whether for business or pleasure. Most have the capability of GPS navigation systems with either downloadable maps or maps of specific regions in the country available on appropriate memory cards that can plug into PDA phones. This can be especially useful for travelers in strange areas where local information may be questionable, at best.

Finding themselves in a strange area can be daunting to some business people and the ability to rely on their PDA phones for GPS directions or their cell phone when contacted the home office can help them get to where they need to be at the time they need to be there. As technology improved, the accuracy of the information also improved making them an ideal business partner for the road warriors.

If you ask, a microbiologist, what a PDA is, he would say “Potato dexterose agar”. Ask a technophobic politician in Canada, he would most probably tell you it was the centrist Progressive Democratic Alliance. However, in the context of gadgets found today, PDA most certainly means a Personal Digital Assistant (coined in 1992 by Apple’s then CEO John Sculley when he was referring to the Apple Newton). This is a device which in layman’s terms means a pocket computer. These gadgets have various uses and seem to keep on increasing in features over the years.

Originally they were basic PCs which meant the user could use them for typing documents, playing some games, using them as address books, checking the time and even listening to the radio. They were characteristically built with touch screens for easy browsing. However, as time passed by, more and more of the PDAs came standard with internet access, allowing the user to surf the web on the go. Each PDA has its own operating system such as Palm OS (for Palmpilots) or Blackberry OS (present in BlackBerry’s).

The Arrival of PDA Phones

Relatively recently however, PDAs started arriving with audio capabilities which allowed them to be used as mobile phones as well as pocket computers. Such PDA Phones are called Smart Phones and are extremely common today.

A PDA and a PDA phone are not to be confused with. A PDA is merely a pocket computer and does not have the option to be used as a mobile phone. An example of a basic PDA is an early Palmpilot model, the Pilot 5000, which did not even have a full color screen, let alone audio capabilities. A PDA phone example, on the other hand would be that of the new Blackberry Pearl 8100. In today’s capitalistic world, competition is found everywhere- and the PDA phone market is no exception.

Earlier on, there were few phones to choose from, and the prices were extremely steep. But these days there are a plethora of models and makers to choose from, and thanks to competition in the service provider market, they aren’t that hard on your wallet. If you are looking for a basic PDA phone and don’t really care for added gimmicks such as cameras and the like, then the Palm Treo 270 is a good bet. It is solid and has a flip cover which protects the keyboard from scratches and dust. However, it has been discontinued by AT&T and T-Mobile and you should be able to find a used one online.

However, if you want a powerful PDA phone with the works, look no further than the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. This device comes packed with a 1.3MP camera and it is EDGE internet enabled. You should find one for less than $350.

If you thought shopping for a Treo case was a simple matter, you could not be further from the truth because the fact of the matter is that you will have a lot to choose from is it holsters, side pouches, top pouches, pocket pouches and a whole lot more. In fact, you may even have to choose the Treo case according to the particular Treo device that you own, and if for example, you have a Treo 755p, 750 or even the 680, you would be better off with a Stingray case that is made just for these models, and which has also been made to fit them very well having a very unique material that is also designed especially for the 755p, 750 and 680 models, and so keeps these Treo devices free from scratches, unwanted shocks and even prevents collisions.

A Few Good Examples

Another great option for your Treo case would be the Krusell Cabriolet Multidapt that targets the 755p and 750 models and is a new generation type of case that offers your device the proper protection and is also stylish as well which most of the new generation values, and wish for from their cases. For more variety, you can even think of buying an organizer case that is ideal for your Treo smartphone, or you could think about owning a Nite Ize Clip Case Plus for your Treo 755p, 750, and 700p and this Swiss army knife case has the complete works that includes place for your Bluetooth headset and it also has the Nite Ize Tooth Ferry for the same purpose.

Many people love the holster kind of Treo case which is an excellent means of having your smartphone handy at all times, and throughout the day it will keep your Treo available for use, though you must check that the material from which the case has been made is durable and even plastic will do. In addition, it will suit your Treo cell phone while also providing it protection from dirt and keeps it free from scratches and always is handy. With a properly matched case, there is no reason why your Treo cell phone is not secure and also conveniently borne so that you can take it out for use without much fuss or bother.

If you are looking for a good place from where to buy your Treo case, then an excellent online store named store.everythingtreo.com should offer you an abundance of choice and plenty of decently priced cases that will suit every different model of Treo, and with the amount of variety you won’t have any trouble finding a decent Treo case for your cell phone all in one location and without so much as needing to go out of the home.

Many people regard the Treo phone to be a smart device that combines the color Palm OS PDA with a mobile phone of normal size and with such integration, users are able to dial directly from their bulky contact lists and also shoot photographs while even being able to send emails as well. And, that’s not all, as there is also five-way navigation button as well as a favorites screen that makes it much easier to get to all of the different functions of any smart Treo phone. It is a device well suited for multi-tasking and with great amount of storage and a speakerphone provides more than basic functionality and features to the customer.

Polyphonic Ringtones

Your Treo phone is well suited for downloads of or use of polyphonic ringtones rather than monophonic ringtones and this device makes it very easy to download even a free MP3 player as well as many tunes from a number of different portals directly and the Treo 600 makes use of MIDI files for ringtones.

With a Palm Treo 650, you get a hybrid PDA and/or cell phone which is why buyers expect much from it and also the many other Treo phones. In fact, this model has aroused a great deal of anticipation from customers and is touted as being the next big thing in Palm OS smartphones and it is a worthy successor to the earlier Treo phone, the Treo 600. With the Treo 650, there are many more new enhancements that make it ideal for a road warrior and it is also a step up from the technology used earlier.

When you are considering buying a Treo phone, look out for this new Treo 650 that is, as mentioned, a cell phone and also a fully featured Palm OS PDA, and it runs on its own CDMA networks in the US when using the Sprint version, and it also provides for PCS Vision, and one of the notable advantages to this Treo phone is that it does not make any concessions as far as phone ergonomics is concerned as is the case with many other full feature PDAs. With your Treo phone, you can be assured of comfort and it is easy to use with just one hand and having every feature that you will find in current generation PDAs, is a good device indeed.

The Treo phone has integrated thumb keyboard which makes it ideally suited for emailing and even though the Treo 650 is somewhat bigger than some feature cell phones, it is still convenient enough to carry in the pocket and quite small as compared with the competition.
